3D Paper Snowflake

Making snowflakes every year is a “must do” at Christmas time.  My Mom grew up in the 1920’s and 30’s.  She showed us how to make these pretty 3D snowflakes that they used to hang in the window or even on the Christmas tree.

I like to use tracing paper.  It is easier to cut and it gives it a translucent look that I reallylike, but regular computer paper works great too.  You will also need some white thread and clear tape.

Begin by folding the paper like a fan in one inch widths back and forth.  Try to keep the edges even as you fold it.

Fold the fan in half and with scissors cut a notch on the folded end.

This is the point where you get to be creative.  Cut designs into both sides of the folded fan.  Be sure that you don’t cut the folded edges completely off.  You will want to make some deep cuts at the top.  It will help it open completely.

Unfold the fan and lay it flat on the table.  Take a thread and tie it tightly around the notch you made in the center.

Carefully unfold the fan and use clear tape to attach the edges to each other.

You can use a half sheet of paper to get smaller snowflakes.  The small ones look nice on a tree, and you can mix the different sizes in your window for a beautiful affect.
