Making Apple Cider Vinegar

Raw unfiltered Apple cider vinegar is one of those things that seems to have so many health benefits that taking a little every day just seems like a smart thing to do.  I have found that making raw unfiltered vinegar is a super easy process and the results are a lovely, light-colored, mild vinegar that is much easier to drink than anything I have tried from the store.

All you will need is some apples, a jar, water, and sugar.

  • Mix a solution of sugar water.  1/4 cup of sugar to one quart of water
  • Place apple pieces into a jar about 1/2 to 3/4 full.
  • Pour the prepared sugar water over it to fill up your jar.
  • Place a piece of cheesecloth over the top and hold it down with a canning ring or a rubber band.
  • Set it on the counter and leave it there to ferment.
  • Stir it daily.
  • After a few days, you will notice it beginning to smell like alcohol.  After a few weeks, the alcohol smell will leave and it will begin to smell like vinegar.

This video will show you how I do it.

After a few weeks when it starts smelling like vinegar you will notice the apple pieces turning brown and ugly, and possibly sinking to the bottom of the jar.

At this point, you can strain out the apples.

Wash out your jar.  It will look pretty yucky after fermenting apples in it. Refill it with the strained vinegar, replace the cheesecloth cap and leave it sitting on your counter.

Your nose is the best indicator of when it is done.  The alcohol smell will be gone and it will smell like vinegar.

At this point, you can cap it off with a regular lid and enjoy your healthful, homemade apple cider vinegar!
